Vandalism and wrangles have crippled operations of Lilongwe Water Board (LWB) water kiosks in areas 24 and 38 forcing residents to cover longer distances to access potable water.
In an interview on Tuesday, Tsabango Water Users Association board chairperson Joseph Patel said they have received reports about vandalism from water attendants and block leaders in the affected areas.

“Yes, it is true people are vandalising the kiosks and we have reported the issue to Lilongwe Water Board who have promised to rectify the problem as soon as they receive funds from donors,” he said.

LWB acting public relations officer Trevor Phoya confirmed the reports that some water kiosks were vandalised some months ago.
“We have some kiosks which were vandalised, thieves broke into the kiosks and stole taps, grill doors and other necessities rendering them unusable. We will soon be maintaining all the affected kiosks,” said Phoya.

Area 38 block leader Chatsalira Josam Lundu explained that he is aware of the incident and had reported it to the sub chair of water users in the area.
On the wrangles, Lundu said the differences have arisen because committees are recruiting kiosk attendants from other areas.

“We have children who are not working, why are they employing water sellers from far? So, after being stopped by the landowners, thieves took advantage to vandalise the kiosks. Leaders from [water users] association should consider the landowners request to rectify this issue,” he said. 
